Action Sports Update

It has been an interesting week of action sports news this week so here’s a round-up of what’s been going on in the sports we love around the globe.

Andy Irons 1978-2010

First and foremost today, still 2nd November in the USA, marks the 1st anniversary of the tragic death of one of the world’s greatest surfers. Andy Irons passed away in a hotel room in Texas whilst on his way home from a competition last year having boarded the plane and then been removed due to illness before take-off. Since then the surfing world has been in mourning for him, a family man with a fiery competitive streak, a man who knew how to rustle Kelly Slater’s feathers. He is and well undoubtedly always be spoken about with high regard by his long-term sponsors Billabong, fans and former colleagues.

Ke11y Slater

Ironically, the second hot news story coming out of the US of A today is that the man, the legend, Quiksilver sponsored Kelly Slater has won his 11th World ASP Title! Another record smashed, Slater was crowned the champ in Round 3 of the Rip Curl Pro Search on Ocean Beach in San Francisco, he has been both the youngest and oldest ASP World Champion having dominated the sport for two decades. Kelly won his previous ASP World Championships in 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010. His career victories also include 48 elite tour wins and two ESPN X Games gold medals. Beat that.

Freeze Festival 2011

Last weekend saw the biggest and best Relentless London Freeze Festival so far. Ski and snowboard competitions were another level and the UK had home interest in snowboarders Jamie Nicholls and and Protest Boardwear rider Ben Kilner who competed in the men’s snowboard FIS World Cup Big Air. Both got through to the final ten and Nike 6.0 rider Nicholls only narrowly missed out on a podium spot having stomped a massive double cork. Competition was fierce though and it was Finland’s Janne Korpi won got 1st.

Jamie Nicholls

In the ski comp it was world class, Atomic rider Jossi Wells who won overall 1st with a ‘close to perfect’ switch double cork 10, even though 2nd place Oscar Sherlin threw down a switch double cork 12, it was not as well executed. Norway’s PK Hunder got the last spot on the podium whilst fellow Scandinavian and freeskiing legend Jon Olsson, could only manage 8th!

As well as the ski and snowboarding action there were countless other things to do and people to see at the two-day festival at Battersea Power Station. Shopping, music and just general fun and games made Freeze an awesome weekend and a must do next year.

11.11.11 – The Nyjah Huston Video

The skate world is eagerly awaiting the drop of Element Skateboard’s and Nyjah Huston’s new movie release which will be available on iTunes on 11.11.11 – the actual name of the movie too. This year has been the biggest yet for the skater who holds the title of youngest ever X Games competitor (he won a silver in 2009) and who this year won his first X Games Gold in the Street competition. Huston also came 2nd overall in the DC Street League Tour having won the overall competition in 2010.

This is not the first time that Nyjah Huston has been involved in a video project with Element. He had his first part in ‘This Is My Element’ and more recently ‘Elementality’, both excellent representations of skateboarding. 11.11.11 – The Nyjah Huston Video – is sure not to disappoint. Here is one of the few teasers than Element have provided for us and if they are anything to go by then we are definitely in for a treat!

This summer, Billabong have hooked up with pro surfer and musician Donavon Frankenreiter for a unique collaboration.

Donavon’s compulsions for music and surfing have taken him on travels around the world. In his teenage years, he was picked up by Billabong as a pro surfer; spending his time at breaks that would have most of us thirsty for more. He developed close relationships with other surfers also involved in the music scene, which became more and more a dominant part of his life.

Frankenreiter describes his summer collection with Billabong as a chance to “bridge the gap” between surfing and his music. You can check out the collection here.

Lex (right) on the podium at the Spring Jam

The Spring Jam at WakeMK is the competition that usually kick starts the wakeboard season in the UK so for those who are not wakeboarding in warmer climes, it is a great event with good music, a good crowd and cash prizes!!
It was a warm sunny day so everyone was happy, the comp went smoothly and everyone seemed to be having fun, either riding or spectating.  The comp was a jam session to start with where you had just half an hour to throw down all your tricks and try to qualify for the final.

Pro Men final results were: Declan Clifford in 1st, Will Manns in 2rd and Gary Stelfox in 3rd.

Pro Women results were: Steph Caller in 1st, Chloe Goudie in 2nd and Lex Balladon in 3rd.

A fun day all round!!

Stay classy San Diego

If you’re based in the US of A, we have got great news for you. Swell.com is the site in the US to get surf clothing from. Based north of San Diego, one of the surfing Mecca’s of the world that is Southern California, not a bad place to be we think!

Needless to say they know a thing or two about surf, they live the life and cater for the lifestyle but also do their bit for the environment by supporting eco-initiatives like Surfrider, making an effort to keep oceans and their beaches clean across America.

They have many brands to choose from with massive ranges from better known brands such as Billabong and Element but also smaller niche brands that might not necessarily be found in the UK. Obviously because of their close proximity to the ocean the emphasis is on surf wear with pretty pieces for the girls and huge ranges of board shorts for the guys. Sector Nine and Element skateboards and longboards are also heavily featured on SWELL, after all they do go hand in hand with the surf vibe of California, and if you’re not in the water then you should either be cruising the beachfront or pumping some iron on Venice beach!

Just try to ignore thier dodgy spelling of things like “Colour”.

RVCA – Coming Soon!

RVCA for men

RVCA for men

RVCA is a stylish lifestyle brand that wouldn’t go a miss in any boutique or skate shop. That’s good news because the brand is new to Two Seasons for spring/summer 2011.

Spoken with a U instead of the V, the brand takes the V and the uncrossed A out of its name to create up and down arrows for the logo.

There is a big story behind the brand and it’s Founder and Company Director P M Tenore. Obviously closely associated with skate and surf culture, RVCA is also a combination of sports with art, music, fashion and modern lifestyle. From the beginning there has been the Artist Network Program (ANP) which showcases up-and-coming and well-known artists. Street graffiti is a big part of this and RVCA is a big part of the scene. The brand provides a positive spin on graffiti which most of us associate with dingy bridges and travelling on the train into most cities in the UK. Check out the artwork showcased on the RVCA website, the graffiti timeline is especially impressive http://www.rvca.com/category/anp/

RVCA for women

RVCA for women

The collection from RVCA has a minimalist feel, simple, clean and well made. The ANP have transformed their artwork into designs for both men and women and sponsored artists, surfers and skaters such as George Thompson, Donny Miller, Ed Templeton, Andrew Pommier, Ben Horton, Mark McCoy and Krush all have signature designs.

Coming very soon so keep watch…

So its that time of year when we all get dressed up in our Sunday bests but for some people it seems to be an excuse (albeit an acceptable one) to wear the most horrendous jumper for the one special day of the year. The Christmas jumper is a timeless piece of clothing and should feature in everyone’s wardrobe. Here at Two Seasons we have been digging out the best ones we can find on the World Wide Web. Our range of winter jumpers and knits are obviously much more fashionable and up to the minute than these bad boys below but here is a beautiful montage of our top ten knitted wonders featuring Michael Jackson and Snoop Dogg!

A perfect 10 for Kelly Slater

A perfect 10 for Kelly Slater

The Billabong Pipe Masters in memory of Andy Irons, the final stop on the Triple Vans Crown tour, was back in full swing with a two metre Backdoor barrel yesterday. Rounds three, four and five were completed in a mammoth day, making the most of the excellent conditions at Pipeline in Oahu, Hawaii.

There were thrills and spills, Quiksilver surfer Kelly Slater was a thrill (as always) winning his place in the quarter finals with the event’s only perfect 10.

“There’s only one or two (waves) in a set, but they’re really good when they come”. Slater said.  “That 10 was a long one. It had that good north corner on it and the right was just growing. That one hit the reef really well.”

Slater will face Australian Adrian Buchan in Quarterfinal no.2. He is the only person who can challenge Joel Parkinson for the Vans Triple Crown title after the Aussie failed to qualify through to the Quarters. Parko and fellow Aussie Owen Wright had a dramatic showdown, Wright eventually coming out on top in the last ten minutes of the round. He then went on to beat defending Billabong Pipe Masters Champion Taj Burrow (AUS), 32. It will be a young first Quarterfinal heat when the competition resumes with Wright taking on Frenchman Jeremy Flores.

With the likes of Mick Fanning also out of the running here is the line up for the Quarterfinals:

QF 1: Owen Wright (AUS) vs. Jeremy Flores (FRA)
QF 2: Kelly Slater (USA) vs. Adrian Buchan (AUS)
QF 3: Jordy Smith (ZAF) vs. Kieren Perrow (AUS)
QF 4: Taylor Knox (USA) vs. Dane Reynolds (USA)

The competition is set to continue with good surf at 7.45am Hawaiian time and the winner of the Triple Crown will be crowned.

Dew TourWinter has arrived and it’s Dew Tour season. The tour kicks off today in Breckenridge with the 6.0 Open and some of the biggest names in freestyle skiing and snowboarding competing in the Superpipe and Freestyle categories. Expect to see the likes of Nike 6.0 sponsored Simon Dumont who is stoked that the pipe has been regulated to a bigger size of 22ft! Also big names such as Jossi Wells, Andreas Hatveit and Tom Wallisch in the skiing fraternity and Billabong snowboarder Jamie Anderson, JJ Thomas and Danny Davis from the strange world of snowboarding

Check out footage from last year’s superpipe final (and Simon Dumont was moaning about the pipe being small…)
