CAT | Competition

At the end of this month, over the August Bank Holiday weekend, some of the world’s next big stars in surfing will descend on Fistral Beach, Newquay for the European King of the Groms final and the 4* ASP Quiksilver Pro Junior event – the last in the series of four European stops.

The King of the Grom’s European final kicks off on Thursday 25th August and is a hunt for the best surfers aged sixteen and under, who will then compete in the international final during the Quiksilver Pro France in October.

The second stage of this Quiksilver, surf-filled weekend is the The Quiksilver Pro Junior which is a 4* ASP stage with a $20,000 prize purse. Over ninety-six of the world’s best junior surfers will compete on Fistral beach to become the new Junior European Champion. Check out more details on the King of the Groms Facebook page.

There will be a great family atmosphere over the weekend where visitors will be treated to live music and child-friendly events. The guys from Surfers Against Sewage will be around promoting their latest campaigns too so get involved!

On a more senior note, next month Quiksilver will be hosting the Quiksilver Pro New York, the first ever world championship surf event to be held in the city that never sleeps. It is the world’s first $1,000,000 surf event too, not a bad days work if they take the top stop for the likes of  Billabong’s Taj Burrow, Joel Parkinson, Kelly Slater and friends! It promises to be a great event for competitors and spectators a like, the festival area on Long Beach will feature other action sports events including Skate, BMX and MotoX.

On Saturday 9th July, the very first Billabong All For One Comp was held at The Snow Centre in Hemel. The event served many purposes, Two Seasons sponsored rider Jake Terry’s 13th Birthday party, charity fundraising and generally fun times – a demo and competition.

The first half of the day was for progression and lessons, provided by Definition and Grounded. The evening session saw the Billabong All For One comp split into three specific comps – kicker, Billabong rail and most outstanding rider. I watched most of the evening session (whilst waiting for birthday cake) and the standard was high, riders came from far and wide. There were the Tamworth regulars along with Belgian and Dutch riders who were slaying all the features of the set up. The Billabong feature rail got a lot of love and UK superstar Jamie Nichols even turned up!

After the session it was up into the bar for the prize giving, raffle and finally some cake! Prizes on the night had been provided very generously by Billabong, Two Seasons, Salomon, Bonfire, K2, Icon, Skullcandy, Flow, Nitro, Giro, Demon, Project 77, The Snow Centre, DC, Air Hole, Moog Royale, Tall Tees, Adio, NXTZ, Amplify, Westbeach,Burton, Whitelines, SCUK. The night managed to raise £504.00 for the MS Trust and Snow Camp.

Tweeeek it Jake!

Tweeeek it Jake!

The highlight for me was being able to present Jake with his Birthday present from myself and his UK sponsor Two Seasons, we got him a Nixon Newton watch, no expense spared, apart from on the wrapping paper which was a Two Seasons carrier bag (I was in a rush, gimme a break! ). For your information the cake was also great!

Final comp results:

Winners on the kicker

Gold – Mark King (snowboard)

Siver – Callum Welch ski)

Bronze – Jake Binnee (snowboard)

On the Billabong Rail:

Gold – Rich Mcintosh (snowboard)

Silver – Craig Colbron (snowboard)

Bronze – Ronnie Organ (snowboard)

Most outstanding rider of the night:

Cody Hierons (snowboard) he was destroying the park and he had taught all day in the coaching sessions!

Best slam:

Ross Welch (ski) for nearly decapitating Zee (photographer)!

A short Edit form my close personal friend who I taught all he knows (like how to use the auto button) Jamie Durham, from the UK’s best film crew Grindhouse will be out soon, watch this space…

It doesn’t get much bigger than the biggest freestyle motocross tour on the planet! The Red Bull X-Fighters Tour in association with Fox, that has been running since 2001 stops across the globe every year, this time round since April when it kicked off in Dubai. Each stop on the tour is a spectacle of lights, music and anything and everything freestyle motocross.

Celebrating all things ladies today as it’s the first day of the Roxy Chicken Jam in Mammoth Mountain brought to you by ROCKSTAR Energy Drink.

Pretty much the biggest women’s prize purse around of 50k, the Jam attracts the biggest names in the world of women’s snowboarding. Half-pipe and slopestyle events are the main focus with individual prizes of $15,000 for 1st place. Now that would come in handy!

This is the 7th year of the competition which is the USA’s only female specific snowboard competition. It has a competitive yet fun and festival-ly vibe with concerts, music this year from the awesome La Roux, mascot half-pipe competition, Roxy demo tests and athlete signings.

Top names such as Torah Bright, Kelly Clark, Billabong girls Jamie Anderson and the UK’s Jenny Jones will represent and Roxy’s newest and youngest female rider Ty Walker will compete – she is already one of the world’s top ten snowboarders and she makes us feel so very old…

Coming to a European town near you?

Coming to a European town near you?

The Nike 6.0 Stairset Battle Tour is underway and has visited the UK on it’s first stop of the 2010/11 rounds, the SNO!zone in Castleford being the chosen destination. The competition which is part of the official TTR 2-Star circuit attracted forty of the UK’s best jibbers from here, there and everywhere. The format of the Battle is ‘Open Jam’ which means noone is categorized, everyone competes against each other. The kids in Castleford were throwing it down and they were a credit to the UK scene putting on an awesome display on the stairset made up of two kink boxes and a rail. Uber technical tricks were ever present and the crowd we’re loving it, particularly the one footers!

As the lights went down and the spot light was concentrated on the stairset, the pressure (and competitiveness) increased, it was the final showdown! Tom Guilmard with his winning FS Blunt 450 out and a perfect landed FS 360 to 50-50 on the down rail meant that he took home first place and a ticket to the final of the tour at Air&Style 2011 in Munich, Germany on February 12th. Jonny Russel took second and  Gareth Andrews third. The boys and girls will now be able to use the stairset all year long as the SNO!zone will be keeping the feature, a perfect excuse to get some practice in for next years comp!

The next stop on the European tour is taking place this weekend and will stop in Switzerland in the resort of Hoch y-Brig which is a lesser known ski area (but then I suppose they would say that about Castleford!) with an absolutely wicked looking snowpark! With a break on the tour until after Christmas it returns to France on 29th December to the Apocalypse of all snow parks, the Apocalypse park in Les Arcs. Remember, best overall impression counts so bring it to win it!
